How did Pia die in “Loch Henry?”

In the second episode of Season 6 of Charlie Brooker's darkly satirical anthology series, Black Mirror, we visit the hauntingly picturesque town of Loch Henry in Scotland, an eerie place marked by a macabre history. This episode is a twisted journey with unexpected revelations, culminating in a shocking and heartbreaking turn of events – the untimely death of one of its main characters, Pia.

Pia, played with nuance by Myha'la Herrold, and her partner Davis (Samuel Blenkin), start their journey in Loch Henry with the intention of making a documentary about an eccentric, egg-protecting vigilante, a lighthearted detour on their visit to Davis' mother Janet (Monica Dolan). However, their direction changes drastically when Pia learns about the dark history of the town.

Pia becomes almost obsessively engaged with the story of Iain Adair, a local man who had tortured and killed several people, and the infamous missing case of the Challis couple. This grim tale leads Pia and Davis to shift their film's focus to the true crimes that occurred in Loch Henry. Their initial research, the narration of the story, and the subsequent visit to Iain Adair's boarded-up house deepens Pia's fascination and ultimately seals her fate.

The harrowing chain of events leading to Pia's death begins when Davis, after an unfortunate accident, ends up in the hospital. During this time, Pia stays with Davis' mother, Janet, a seemingly innocent woman at first glance. As she digitizes footage from old tapes while Janet prepares dinner, Pia uncovers a horrifying truth. She stumbles upon a snuff film showing Janet, her husband Kenneth, and Iain Adair torturing the missing Challis couple. The realization that the woman she's been spending time with, who's cooking dinner for her in the next room, is a murderer, leaves Pia horrified and fearing for her life.

In the grips of terror, Pia manages to keep a façade of calm during dinner and subsequently flees the house. Janet, realizing that her dark secret has been discovered, gives chase in her car. It's a harrowing scene, playing out like a nightmarish rendition of a countryside chase, with Pia, terrified and desperate, just managing to evade Janet's sight.

The climax of this sequence is heartbreaking. In her frantic attempt to escape, Pia tries to cross a river but tragically slips, smacks her head on a rock, and dies. Her lifeless body is seen drifting along the water, marking the end of her terrifying journey in Loch Henry.

Pia's death, a moment marked by its grim realism and raw tragedy, is pivotal in the 'Loch Henry' episode of Black Mirror. Her relentless pursuit of the truth, her determination to make a documentary exposing Iain Adair's crimes, and her horrifying discovery of Janet's monstrous secret all lead to this tragic moment. Pia's death is not just the climax of her own story arc but also a game-changer for Davis, who is left to face the shocking revelations about his family and the gruesome legacy of Loch Henry. The reality that the quiet town was home to such heinous crimes, and that his own mother was a part of them, sets the stage for the rest of the episode, and further delves into the twisted relationship between technology, media, and our morbid fascination with true crime.
